Daal (Lentils)

mustard seed
curry leaves
small onion
2 cloves
garlic (finely diced)
small tomato (chopped)
1⁄4 teaspoon
turmeric powder
1⁄4 teaspoon
cumin powder
1⁄4 teaspoon
garam masala
1⁄2 cup
Moong Daal
1⁄2 cup
Toor Daal
small piece of fresh ginger


Rinse the daal and cook according to package directions or pressure cook for 10 mins. In a separate pan, heat oil and add the mustard seeds, curry leaves, garlic and onions. Let the onions brown. Add the tomatoes and the turmeric, cumin, and garam masala powders. Cook for 15 mins. 

Add this mixture to the daal and add a little water if needed. Salt to taste. Simmer for 5 - 7 mins. Garnish with cilantro.  (Recipeā™¦351)
